Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
