The atmosphere at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Unraveling?
Was Lazio's season unraveling, or did there exist a binding element keeping it intact from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, but then he publicly stated that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Rumours that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining first five games, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to ascertain if they're getting better or imploding.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback
One individual kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his owning club were attempting to extend his stay a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team without replacements.
He joined in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."
Uncovering His True Position
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to work out the nature of his skill set. Billed as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
