EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
