RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels down to the facility... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
